THE NEW YORK TIMES: The gun was an early Christmas gift from his parents: a semiautomatic 9-millimeter Sig Sauer handgun. “My new beauty,” Ethan Crumbley, 15, called it.

The day after Thanksgiving, he and his father had gone together to a Michigan gun shop to buy it. He and his mother spent a day testing out the gun, which was stored unlocked in the parents’ bedroom. On Monday, when a teacher reported seeing their son searching online for ammunition, his mother did not seem alarmed.

“LOL I’m not mad at you,” Jennifer Crumbley texted her son. “You have to learn not to get caught.”

A North Carolina elementary school suspended a second grader for bringing a loaded gun to school. No word on how the child gained access to the gun.
The onus is in ADULTS to ensure children don’t access guns. Be SMART for Kids: Assume children and teens will find guns and store them locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition.

THE COLUMBIAN: The Washington state House on Thursday released its plan for the upcoming legislative session, announcing a limited number of vaccinated lawmakers will be allowed on the chamber floor and that unvaccinated representatives will need to undergo COVID-19 testing three times a week in order to work in their on-campus offices.

Their plan comes two weeks after the Senate released its own plan on how the 60-day session that begins Jan. 10 will look, and it differs in key ways. In the Senate, there is no vaccination requirement to be on the chamber floor, but daily testing will be required on those days for all 49 senators and staff, regardless of vaccination status. >> Read more.

MEDIUM.COM: Gov. Jay Inslee today named Steve Hobbs as Washington Secretary of State. Hobbs replaces Kim Wyman who is vacating the position to take a role with the Biden administration.

The governor is in Scotland this week for COP 26, the world climate change conference. A video of his announcement is below.

CNN:The Biden administration announced a new set of immediate and short-term actions Tuesday aimed at alleviating supply chain issues at the nation’s ports, waterways and freight networks as the administration takes steps to implement the newly passed, but not yet signed, bipartisan infrastructure bill.

The goals and actions, the White House said in a fact sheet, “lay the foundation for successful implementation of the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal. This action plan will increase federal flexibilities for port grants; accelerate port infrastructure grant awards; announce new construction projects for coastal navigation, inland waterways, and land ports of entry; and launch the first round of expanded port infrastructure grants funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal.”

The news comes days after the bipartisan infrastructure package passed Congress and one day before President Joe Biden’s trip to the Port of Baltimore to promote the bill.

Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz: Effective today, I am lifting the statewide burn ban on all forest lands under Washington State Department of Natural Resources fire protection. With autumn rains and shifting weather conditions, I am optimistic that we’ve turned a corner.

THOM HARTMANN FANS: While Washington bickers about what, if anything, has been achieved after 20 years and nearly $5tn spent on “forever wars”, there is one clear winner: the US defense industry.

In Iraq and Afghanistan, the American military relied to an unprecedented degree on private contractors for support in virtually all areas of war operations. Contractors supplied trucks, planes, fuel, helicopters, ships, drones, weapons and munitions as well as support services from catering and construction to IT and logistics. The number of contractors on the ground outnumbered US troops most years of the conflicts. By the summer of 2020, the US had 22,562 contractor personnel in Afghanistan – roughly twice the number of American troops.

The gravy train for the defense industry was also fueled by the way the wars were budgeted and paid for.
